Comprehensive and Cost-effective Mental Health Services to support Primary Care Practitioners

“Primary care is the bedrock of our healthcare system, and the key to enabling the shift to bring healthcare beyond hospitals into the community. It is an integral component in our transformative efforts to bring patient-focused care closer to home” - Minister of State for Health, Dr Lam Pin Min, at MOH Committee of Supply Debate 2017.

The primary healthcare landscape has seen tremendous development and improvement over the past few years. This is part of the efforts to ensure that every Singaporean can receive affordable, high quality healthcare close to home. With the shifting of healthcare beyond hospitals, it is important to provide not just treatment for physical conditions, but also mental health care.

As such, AIC’s ongoing collaboration with the National Healthcare Group Polyclinics (NHGP) to support those with mental health conditions has been steadily expanding their scope of services to better support their patients. Here is what they do in a nutshell:

NHGP services

While support for patients in polyclinics can be found in the form of HMS you may refer patients who go to GP clinics to our Community Intervention Teams (COMIT) for multidisciplinary support. COMIT is made up of Allied Health Professionals and can provide a range of community mental health services. These services are similar to the HMS in polyclinics, and range from case management to psychosocial assessment and intervention. The services provided by COMIT complement the clinical care you provide to your patients, and ensure that their psychosocial needs are supported holistically. This integrated and collaborative care also facilitates greater acceptance of treatment.

We applaud the on-going efforts of all primary care doctors and supporting professionals, in the early identification and management of mental health conditions. Together, primary care can be relied upon as the first line of care for those with various physical or mental health needs.

If you have patients who you feel would benefit from COMIT services, please write in to careinmind@aic.sg.
